Concrete Works – Try it yourself

When planning your new house, a lot of things are very hard to decide. For instance, how many rooms should be upstairs versus downstairs? How big should each room be? What kind of countertops should you choose?

There are many customizable options. It’s often hard to decide what materials are necessary, and which ones aren’t. But one thing is for sure, almost every new house construction will involve the use of concrete. It is one of the most durable, yet versatile building materials. It can hold up to tornadoes, hurricanes, and sometimes even earthquakes!

So when your house is being built, you should take some things into consideration when hiring your concrete contractors.

First of all, make sure that you hire someone who works specifically with concrete. Hiring someone that knows the material and what exactly it is capable of doing, where it can and cannot be used, and how much to purchase for the job (without spending an excess amount of money), just saves a lot of headache and hassle. You don’t need to be shafted in your own home (or in what will soon be your own home).

When choosing your contractor, choose someone that you feel comfortable working with. Concrete equipment operators must be trustworthy. You don’t want the concrete to wind up all over your yard because someone accidentally pulled the wrong lever.

Make sure you double check their supplies and material lists. There are sly contractors out there in this world we live in that will overcharge you in a heartbeat. Just be sure to look over their materials list to verify that they are only charging you for what was used at your construction site.

Don’t hire someone that is only used to pouring your foundation for decorative concrete. When it comes to grinding, polishing, or staining, someone that is only familiar with how to pour a level slab won’t necessarily know how to operate the concrete grinding equipment that is necessary for such decorative jobs. In the end, you will just wind up with a floor that you’re not at all proud of. There will be scratches, swirls, and uneven coating covering your new place.

Always, always, always be sure to check your references. It’s easy these days to simply hire the guy that offers you the lowest price (especially with the economy the way it is). Don’t make the grave mistake of thinking that everyone does the same quality job just because it’s something as simple as concrete. You may think it’s a simple job that anyone can do, but an uneven slab can mean a crooked house – leading to extremely costly (and unnecessary) repairs down the road.

Above all else, do your homework. Don’t hire the wrong guy for the job just to save yourself some time. After all, you are spending quite a bit of money on this project, aren’t you?
